Do we have to wear only black when in mourning?

Every time my period comes, I gather black leggings, black underwear, and black sweatpants from my closet because the fear of 'leakage' has completely taken over my social life. I can’t relax when I wear white out of that fear; I don’t even want to go out with friends. Is it even possible not to be this careful? How do you deal with it, or does everyone secretly live like this? Can someone share a tip?

I swear, I was also getting into the black tights thing like you for years. Especially when I was at school, that white shirt-black pants period was a nightmare. Then I started using thin pads stacked on top of each other instead of thick ones. You know, just in case something slips, someone can cover for you. Oh, and I also add a panty liner over my underwear, so I feel more at ease.

My daughter, wearing black isn’t a bad thing, so why are you stressing out about it? You call it social pressure, but it’s actually completely related to hygiene. Wearing white is risky too; if there's a stain, everyone sees it, what’s the point? Some things have very simple solutions; you’re making it harder for yourselves.

Well, honestly, when you have your period, it’s a matter of trust related to the amount of bleeding and the choice of hygiene products. If you have very heavy bleeding, I think you should see a doctor and evaluate the situation. Maybe they will suggest a different protection method. Also, you can use night pads during the day; they tend to be wider. This can help reduce concerns about leaks.

Thanks everyone, I've received some really good ideas. I should also add that I usually have very heavy bleeding for the first two days, so I'm a bit anxious about that. I mean, I'm still hesitant about using tampons or other products; I've never tried them at all. The reusable pad thing makes sense to me, and I'll also think about the doctor issue.

Oh, that fear of staining really freezes me when I get out of bed in the morning. There was a time when I was even embarrassed to get up after sitting at the office, just looking at my chair to see if there was a stain. Black seems like a solution, but wandering around like this in the summer heat drives you crazy.

I don't understand why you never talk about these tampon or menstrual cup discussions. They're both environmentally friendly and they stop leaks directly. But no, we have to struggle with old-fashioned pads. Okay, it's everyone's choice, but I think the obligation to wear black comes from our own simplicity.
