Did you take my tampon? I even fought with my mom

I want to use tampons during my period because I feel more comfortable. But my mom never lets me, thinking they're unhealthy. According to her, I should use pads, and tampons are just modern nonsense. Honestly, I'm confused; are they really harmful to health, or is my mom exaggerating? What do you use?

I had the same problem, my mom never accepted tampons. I went to the gynecologist, and once he explained it, she changed her mind. Especially in the summer, I felt very comfortable in the sea and stuff. I think you should go together to the doctor; it’s more convincing.

You're criticizing the mother's attitude, but try to show a little empathy yourself. The woman believes in something that's harmful to her health; she might have grown up with incomplete information. Instead of outright rejecting her, it would be better if you researched why it's not harmful and calmly explained it to her 😮‍💨

It is not scientifically accurate to say that tampons are harmful, but if not used correctly, they carry a risk of infection. It's important to change them every 4-6 hours at maximum. One of the risks is a rare infection known as TSS. If you follow hygiene rules, there shouldn't be any issues. Your mother's concerns may stem from outdated information.

I already knew that using tampons isn't harmful to health, but the issue of TSS has been on my mind a little. I don't leave them in for very long anyway, but if it's that dangerous, my mom might be worried about it. Also, let me add that my mom is against it not just from a health perspective, but also culturally. I have no idea how to overcome this.

It scared me the most at night, you know, when you can't check if you've changed it while sleeping, thinking about the infection risk feels bad. But during the day, that damp feeling from the pad just disappears. I didn't argue with my mom when I experienced this, but I made my own decision.

As a boy, my mom lectured us for a long time about my sister not using tampons. At that time, I didn’t understand why she was so adamant against it, but as her brother, I even occasionally felt like it was something to be ashamed of. Mothers sometimes accept cultural pressures without questioning them. My sister only told her she wasn't using them; in reality, she did. They make her comfortable.
