I want a divorce but my spouse is threatening me with alimony

My marriage has become unbearable. I want to get a divorce, but my spouse keeps threatening me with alimony. They claim that since I am a homemaker, I won't be able to claim any rights. I'm really scared; is this true? What do I need to know before leaving the house?

Being a housewife doesn't mean you can't receive alimony. Even if I'm not working, the time you spent together and your efforts are legally recognized. Don't make any decisions without consulting a lawyer. They may be trying to intimidate you with those threats.

You definitely don't need to be afraid. Free consultations are provided at the bar association in the courthouse. Go there, and you can learn all the processes from a lawyer. Leave evidence before you leave home. For example, record their threats.

Why is your spouse doing this? Is it really about money, or is it fear of losing you? The alimony threat feels a bit like a weak bargaining chip to me. Maybe it would be better to try talking openly and seeking a compromise.

According to the laws, a woman who does not work can still be granted alimony based on her contributions during the duration of the marriage. However, the amount and duration of this alimony depend on the court's decision. It would be very beneficial to consult with a family law specialist to learn about your rights.

Thank you for the comments. There's also this: Apart from the threats, they're pressuring me financially, saying things like, 'How are you going to make ends meet?' and so on. Every time I hear this, I become even more unsure.

As far as I'm concerned, your spouse is actually afraid of things other than alimony. Do they believe they can't leave you alone? Maybe it's the household routine, habits, and such. So, I think there's another reason here too.

My daughter, she is trying to intimidate you with such threats, it’s quite obvious. If she were my daughter, I would tell her to pack her bags and come to me immediately. The court will decide the outcome of the alimony issue anyway. Don't act on her word, she’s just making noise.
