Is he doing it to get attention?

The other evening during dinner, my spouse kept checking their phone, and I felt as if I didn't exist. It bothers me that they are focusing on something else throughout the meal. I don't know how to explain this to them; do you think I'm thinking wrong?

Is it doing this all the time or just sometimes? If it's something new, maybe it's trying to distract as you suggested.

@kahvebitmeden it actually happened before, but it wasn’t this obvious.

I don't think that's distracting or anything; everyone is glued to their phones anyway. But if you're uncomfortable, just say it clearly.

maybe it's something like work-related issues or something. like your sister said, it could be stress. but if it keeps happening, you should seriously talk about it 😳

Maybe it's because of something they saw on their phone that changed their mood, rather than just being distracted. If they came across something bad on social media, or something work-related, that could have affected their morale. Did you ask them why they were so lost in thought?

I thought about it again, could it be that when they look at their phone, they are unconsciously acting like they're excluding you, or is it intentional? Maybe their intention isn't that disturbing, but it just doesn't work out 🙂

Maybe that's why she's swaying, because she feels comfortable next to him. You know how some people act extra relaxed when they're with their close ones; is she in that mood, I wonder? But of course, in this case, is comfort really a good thing? That's debatable.

You're saying it's just comfort or distraction, but... maybe it's a deliberate "hey, I'm bored" message? I mean, sometimes a person throws out a subtle hint like that just to pause the conversation. Have you ever thought about that?

Or maybe they're looking at how you react in situations like this? You know, they might be testing you with the "how much do they care, will they throw a fit, or are they indifferent" test. Some people treat it like a game 🤔

We talk about tests and stuff, but I think some people completely enter another dimension when they get engrossed in their phones. They might not even be aware of it; it's just a state of drifting rather than a test. Do you even understand which app they're looking at?

So, is this situation only with you, or is it the same with other people as well? If it's generally like that, it's just their temperament, but if it's specific to you, then we need to look for something else.

It seems like there's a conversation about which app or content we're going to ask about, but what will you do once you find out? I mean, isn't it already annoying when someone is constantly scrolling on their phone while sitting with you? Regardless of the size, just "looking at it" is enough of a problem.
