Am I being unfair in salary negotiations? My partner isn't supportive.

I had to give a speech about a salary increase and I asked for the amount I wanted, but my partner thinks I’m being too eager. She said, ‘You’re not worth that much, just accept it anyway.’ To be honest, both her attitude and the uncertainty at work have stressed me out. Do you think romantic relationships should be involved in such discussions? Or should it remain purely a career conversation?

I think it's interesting that your partner is making such direct comments. I mean, ultimately, it's up to the employer to determine how much you're worth, right? It felt like they might be bothered by something else, maybe your pace of advancement or comparing themselves to you... I would suggest discussing it a bit more.

Based on my own experience, I definitely advise not to compromise in salary negotiations. It's also important to separate romantic relationships from business discussions. Your partner may have good intentions, but this is your career, and the decision should be yours.

But I don't think you should dismiss that statement. Have you really researched your own numbers? If it doesn't match market conditions, the employer will just close the door. Maybe your partner is telling you to be more measured after seeing this; it's not necessarily out of bad intentions.

How you manage work-related issues in communication with your partner affects the relationship. Generally, in such situations, it's healthier to go in with a clear plan and fully explain what you want. If the other person's contribution is support rather than ideas, it would be better.

By the way, there's a detail I forgot to mention; my partner is also in an average position at their job and sometimes earns less than I do. I wondered if that might create some jealousy? But I'm hesitant to ask directly 😅

This has become quite a deep issue. Linking financial matters to jealousy doesn't seem to provide a direct solution because we can't know for sure. However, if there's a feeling of comparison, it could be a bit of their personal insecurity. Still, one thing is stuck in my mind: If they can't provide support on such a serious matter, would they do the same in other areas?
