Dodged the salary question, then spoke insinuatingly

Salary matters are sensitive; his insinuating remarks were not appropriate. In such cases, it's better to put a stop to it from the beginning, but if the atmosphere is already tense, you need to be careful.

Listen, if my daughter were in your place, she would draw a line on that guy's face. If he's speaking condescendingly, he's either characterless or looks down on you. In the working life, nobody has the right to speak from above like that. Still, try to stay calm to not create tension at work, but keep that boundary in mind.

So why did you bring it up directly when the topic of salary came up? Maybe people prefer to keep their salaries private, and someone in the room might be criticizing this. Is it really sensible to talk about this in the first place?

@mantikli_kadin it was actually a pretty casual conversation, like it felt sincere. I haven't experienced something like this before; there had been some subtle insinuations before, but this time it was obvious.

@annecik you're being so dramatic that you'd think the guy started a fight at work! You can imply things and get by; people are just like that at the workplace. You're way too upset 🤦‍♀️

I think salary topics should be discussed very carefully in the workplace. In Turkey, salaries are not usually talked about openly; they generally create either competition or jealousy. Such suggestive conversations can also be a sign of insecurity. It would be better for you to maintain professional boundaries and avoid going into these kinds of details again.

@ik_expert you call it professional boundaries, but when people at work engage in such meaningless conversations, you also need to stand your ground. I mean, if you keep staying distant and passive, these individuals will affect you even more.
