Could my Patronus be stalking me on Instagram?

Lately, there has been a strange tension between my boss and me. But it's not about work, it's about social media. They've made comments a few times about the clothes I've worn and the places I've gone on the weekends. They always make these suggestive remarks. Most recently, they said something like, "So you're really into nightlife, huh?" There's not much on my profile that's public, but I still feel uneasy. How do you think I can express this? Or am I overreacting? It's always about drawing that strange line, so how does one deal with things like this?

I experienced exactly the same. My boss wasn't following me on Instagram but was constantly commenting on my posts. For example, he would ask, "Are you out again this weekend?" It turns out he was following me with a fake account. That’s when I realized I need to share as little of my personal life as possible. I had a serious talk and set boundaries, basically scolded him. I felt relieved.

I got so frustrated on your behalf that it's literally a situation that takes your breath away. When you heard that comment, there must have been a tightness in your chest right away. That feeling of "my life is being completely watched" is a terrible thing. I think you should clearly and somewhat distantly express that you're uncomfortable with your private life being the subject of discussion.

Honey, can you please not share so openly? Okay, let's say your profile is public, but if someone bothers you, just tell them directly. Set a clear boundary: "It's not your place to comment on my private life." If you were my daughter, you wouldn't be so publicly exposed in the first place.

There is a complete abuse of power balance here. By commenting on your personal life, the boss is actually creating a control zone. This is an issue regarding boundaries both at work and at home. No one should interfere in your personal life. Such suggestive remarks are neither professional nor should they be made to put pressure on you as a woman.

But I think you should also think a bit. If you're so fond of nightlife and constantly sharing, people can comment as well. Your boss might not be saying it with another intention; they are just pointing out your energy outside of work. Professionalism is not just about work performance; it also includes your image outside.

In fact, this situation raises an ethical issue in the office environment. Normally, the distinction between social media and personal life in workplace communication is clear. If your boss is genuinely following you on Instagram, it may not be abnormal, but if insinuating conversations are causing discomfort, you can share the situation with HR. Keeping a record is important.

I want to add that they actually don't follow me on Instagram. But I feel like either they've created a fake account or they're watching through someone else. Because the things they say are exactly what I posted in a story. I checked my follower list, and there’s no one I don’t know, but I'm still uneasy.

If your boss isn't following you, who might be getting this information? Is there someone you talk very openly with at the office, or do they have a connection to your acquaintances? Because it seems like your stories are getting to them from somewhere.

There seems to be something else going on here. If they're making these strange insinuations, they might be watching you somehow, or someone is leaking information from the office. In my opinion, you should keep an eye on your social circle; it might not even be related to him. But if there's a fake account issue, that needs to be uncovered.
