I said just to trim the ends, but it turned out so short

I haven't had my hair this short in years, but didn't I tell the hairdresser to just take a little off the ends? I was shocked when I saw it in the mirror after it was cut, and I paid so much for it. Right now, I can't go outside without a hat; my confidence is at an all-time low. How can I fix this or do I just have to get used to it? They say it's better to cut it short instead of dealing with falling hair, but I regret it.
