My new coworker asked a strange question about my fiancée

Today, one of the new friends handed me a work file and oddly asked, 'Does your fiancé share you a lot on social media?' It was really strange for them to ask something so personal in front of everyone. I didn't understand if they wanted to make an unpleasant implication, maybe they were just trying to joke. But why start with such questions? Do you think it would be an exaggeration if I reacted harshly?

I had a similar situation happen to me. A co-worker asked about a photo of my fiancée that was constantly being shared on social media, saying, 'Doesn't it bother you to be shared this much?' I didn't know how to respond, so I asked my fiancée, and she blocked that woman. I think you should talk to your fiancée too; people like that don't leave you alone.

So, did you respond to that at work? Did you stay silent, or did you reply? I think people gauge seriousness based on that reaction 😅

@ayca34 my response was really vague because I was caught off guard. I laughed it off, but it didn't sit well with me 😂

@yildiz90 I think it's a weird reaction for your fiancé to block that woman. Maybe the fiancé was just curious to get to know you and didn't mean any harm? We shouldn't jump to conclusions and view it as hostile.

Questions like these regarding women's personal space are a common boundary violation in the workplace. You don’t have to escalate it to HR, but you can simply respond with a clear and concise "Let's not get into these kinds of topics." Instead of a harsh reaction, establishing a professional line helps maintain both your image and your peace.

You said something about HR and all, but I think you should just say "Is this funny now?" and laugh, so it won't be taken seriously. If they mentioned social media, they definitely stalked you 😂

The work environment you mention is a serious place; such things shouldn't be done in jest. Also, showing your fiancé too much on social media isn't a good thing. Maybe that's where the discomfort comes from 😂

My ex-fiancé never shared me; he would say, 'Social media is unnecessary.' Later, I found out it was to deceive others. Now, such topics immediately catch my attention. That employee might have just wanted to talk, but I felt it was a signal for you. Stay alert.

@bernaannem you said it well, but please let people share their partners comfortably. What's the connection between social media and the woman's question? It's just the thoughtlessness of a coworker, it's that simple.
