I always had an obsession with dark-colored underwear during my period. The one time I used light colors, I got a stain and panicked; I was in complete shock. That's why I tried silicone pads, and they were a real lifesaver. They're both comfortable and keep me clean.
To be honest, I choose comfort in these kinds of things. I can't act according to the possibility of anyone seeing my underwear. My period is already tough, so why should I deal with that pressure too?
But you also say "the possibility of getting close to someone," but isn't hygiene and health more important during that period? I don't understand how you take such a risk without thinking about this. I think you should clarify your priorities because this conflict arises from there.
Now, dark underwear is fine, but if you're really worried about stains, you can use night pads. They are super absorbent, so they won’t leak and you’ll feel safer. Or, you could try adding an extra layer of protection to your underwear; for example, there are period panties available online.
Let me add that sometimes my period is very light in the first days, so it feels like I need less protection during that time. But the last days are very heavy, and that's when I get anxious about what to wear and can't feel comfortable. So, this might also be a reason for that conflict.
