Families argue over TV show choices, is this how it is?

There are fights at our house every evening because of the TV shows. My mom insists on watching those classic Turkish series, while my dad is hooked on foreign series on Netflix. Neither side is willing to compromise on their shows nor do they take turns using the TV. Do you have similar disputes at your place, and how do you resolve them?

We have similar situations at our house too. My dad always wants to watch old Turkish movies, while my mom has gotten hooked on cooking channels on YouTube. Sometimes, it’s even hard to eat because of the remote control battles. We found a solution with everyone watching something in their own room, but it feels a bit disconnected.

My spouse and I have had arguments about the same topic. She loves the shows on Star, while I watch the series on HBO. When we couldn’t solve the problem, we bought a second television, but honestly, that wasn’t the complete solution. Still, it was a peaceful way to handle it.

But I’ll be honest, this might not just be a matter of “show selection.” Foreign series tend to be more individualistic, whereas Turkish series are somewhat more family-oriented, so maybe that’s where the fundamental disagreement lies. Have you ever thought about why your dad doesn’t want to explore a different activity instead of asking for Netflix every evening?

The increase in cultural preference conflicts is actually part of a general trend. Domestic series are generally drama-heavy and follow certain patterns. Foreign series are different but do not appeal to some generations. Communication gaps often stand out in family media wars. It makes sense to find a middle ground for a common genre.

Let me add this; we actually have a small TV in our room, but my mom insists on using the one in the living room, saying ‘that’s the sitting area.’ My dad acts like his charisma will go away if he leaves the living room. I seriously feel stuck in between.
