My mother said to break off the engagement just because the salary is low?

I have been with someone for 3 years, and we love each other. However, my mom has been constantly complaining about his salary for about a month! She says, 'How will he support a household on that salary? Will he leave you hungry?' Honestly, it hurts me a lot, and my partner senses this situation, but I can't explain to him what my family says. Do you think it would be more reasonable to have a conflict with my family or to accept the situation and end my relationship?

I was in the same situation. We were engaged for 2 years, and my family kept complaining about my salary. In the end, I had to tell my mom, 'Look, your people won't be at our wedding.' It was tough, but my boyfriend was really supportive during that time. Try talking openly with your mom; maybe you can convince her.

But now I want to ask something: You mentioned ending the engagement, but does a low salary really cause issues? You know, your dreams, your expenses, etc.? Maybe your mom could be right, have you ever talked about this with her?

In such matters, generally, two things are important: one is your emotional connection, the other is practical conditions. Financial issues are actually one of the biggest problems families face in marriage. You can try to understand your mother from a psychological perspective and have an open conversation with her about this. You can also address the process with a professional family counselor.

Thanks for the responses. To be honest, I'm not seriously considering breaking off the engagement, but if the salary issue continues like this, it seems like it will create problems. I'm also putting extra stress on myself to make sure my girlfriend doesn't see what my mom is saying.

I think you should make a direct plan. Is the current salary enough to cover basic needs, rent, etc.? If it is, you can show this to your mother and help her feel more at ease. If it isn't, discuss ways to increase the salary or find additional income with your partner. This way, the issue becomes more concrete.
