I took a content idea from my friend and adapted it in my own style, and then they spread it around saying, ‘you copied me, you stole my follower.’ I can honestly say I was inspired, but do you think it needs to be blown out of proportion like this? What are the ethical boundaries in content creation? Am I being too sensitive, or did I make a mistake?

8This whole content thing is quite complicated already. Everyone is taking something from somewhere; it’s really hard to distinguish between inspiration and plagiarism at a certain point. I think if you did it in your own style, then it’s not directly the same as theirs anyway. But I don’t get why your friend has blown up like this. Maybe they’re afraid of losing their own audience.
It’s not really about you taking his idea and doing it in your own style. Did you say anything to him about his idea, did you get his approval? People want to be acknowledged even in the simplest of efforts. If you mentioned his idea in your own content, maybe you wouldn’t be in this situation.
I experienced something similar; a coworker presented one of my suggestions to the manager as if it were their own. At that moment, I didn’t want to escalate the situation, but I was really annoyed inside. Later, I talked face to face with that person and said, ‘I feel worthless when you do this,’ and we resolved it nicely. Maybe it would be better if you talked directly to your friend.
But think about it this way: if your idea had been taken, what would your reaction be? Just because you said, “I was inspired,” it doesn’t solve everything. Would a person want someone else to come ahead after working on something for months? How would you feel if you were in their place?
The most important issue regarding this type of content production is actually the line between inspiration and plagiarism. Copyright laws are even gray in this matter, so unless there is a direct copy, saying “you stole” is not legally valid, but it can harm relationships emotionally. Such situations can be overcome with careful and open communication.
Let me add that they directly messaged me from DM saying, ‘you stole my idea, I can’t be friends with you anymore.’ Honestly, I was sad about it, but as I said, I didn’t copy it exactly. I’m now wondering if I should have asked someone for their opinion, it’s pretty complicated.
So, for example, what was your relationship like with your friend? Have you ever discussed your opinions with each other? Maybe they took it as being sensitive because there might be some history involved.
It seems like this “you stole my idea” situation has really put you in a tough spot. Especially the fact that they wrote that directly in DMs seems to have hit hard. I think everyone can react this strongly out of fear of losing, but this knot won’t be untangled without sitting down together and discussing the details
