Even if someone is trying to play along with a false identity, it doesn’t mean everyone around has to be a part of this game. This kind of confrontation can create space for them to stop and reflect.

Instead of looking for a "reason" behind this fake life, perhaps it makes more sense to focus on its direct effects. Is it starting to harm you or your surroundings? Or do you just feel disturbed watching from a distance? Maybe it's not something to make such a big deal out of.
This life on social media continues as long as it is not questioned and left exposed by those around. People usually rely on the comfort of thinking, "you’re doing it, but no one is saying anything." If those around them remain silent, then according to them, there is no problem at all. Isn't anyone saying anything directly?
Do people in real life act according to his social media identity, or is everyone still interacting with his true personality? If there is an interest that feeds the fake persona, this issue will take deeper roots. In that case, the environment also needs to be reassessed.
Is he acting on behalf of others to feed his false identity during this process? For example, at work or in his social circle, has he ever asked you or someone else for something to support the image he presents? If he is maintaining this life by using other people's names or resources, then the situation changes.
So do the choices he makes to sustain this false life create a burden or stress for him? In other words, could this situation be harmful to his mood or health? Perhaps he has fallen into a cycle from which there is no escape.
