I got this joke stuck in my head

My boyfriend made a joke in our friend group, calling me "the manager of our house." I smiled at everyone, but it ate me up inside. When I got home, I asked him about it, and he said it was just a joke, but I don't know; I have a sensitivity to these kinds of things. Is this my excessive sensitivity, or is it a kind of boundary violation? Sometimes I think these seemingly simple things actually carry a big message. Do you think I'm overreacting?

I've been in a similar situation. My boyfriend once said in a gathering, 'my lady is the authority at home, I work', and everyone laughed. I didn't say anything at that moment, but we talked about it later. He actually meant to praise me, but I didn't take it as a slight. I directly said that I felt uncomfortable, and he replied, 'I didn't think about that while joking'. I think you shouldn't hesitate to talk about it.

I swear it's a very ordinary thing. I mean, the guy didn't do this just to hurt you. Plus, the phrase 'the head of our house' doesn't really have a negative connotation. He just made a normal joke. Maybe he wanted to be a little relaxed among the group. You might not have exaggerated, but I’d say don't make a big deal out of it.

I think you should directly say this to her: 'Jokes like this make me uncomfortable, please don't be so casual when speaking in the group.' Make it very clear, but not accusatory. If she doesn’t take that well, then it might turn into a serious discussion.

I think you're overreacting a bit, to be honest. The guy's intentions are clear: he was trying to create a fun moment. I understand your sensitivity, but overthinking such small jokes can put unnecessary stress on your partner. Maybe you could also try to relax a bit. People don't have to measure everything all the time.

Update: Let me add this, I've been really hung up on the word 'müdür' (director). To me, it has a connotation of authority, which doesn't fit the dynamic of our relationship. Even if it was just a joke, I don't know why it affected me so much.

You are very sensitive to being given the wrong message in a relationship. It can be really tough to feel like, in that group setting, "everyone is laughing and I feel uncomfortable." It probably made you feel like you were watching from the outside. Yet, at that moment, you say nothing and ask about it when you get home, which is a natural response. Maybe you can address the issue directly by saying, "I'm not used to jokes like this," in that setting.

Such sensitivities can affect the perception of boundary violations in relationships. What is usually determinant here is often the individual's past experiences and attachment style. If this situation recurs frequently or if other jokes also bother you, it might be helpful to consider couples therapy or to approach the issue from a broader perspective. Because in places where language is used for joking, it can sometimes become challenging to define individual boundaries.

Let's be clear, if my husband did something like this, I would have reacted differently. Every action taken outside reflects how the relationship is perceived externally. It's not wrong for you to show sensitivity here, but the harmony between both sides is also important. After all, everyone's relationship within the group is somewhat debatable. You need to relax a bit more and say, 'this is part of life.'

I think this topic is taken very personally. The guy says, 'I said it to lift you up,' but you're still questioning, 'Is this a message?' Instead of blowing such a small thing out of proportion, try to understand why he made such a comment within the group dynamics and the context at that moment. Sometimes a joke is just a joke; searching for subtext can become a tiring habit.
