Does scheduling weekly chores work in a home with children?

Imagine a household where both parents work and have a preschool-aged child: One takes care of the housework and daily planning in the morning while the other looks after the child; in the evenings, work and caregiving responsibilities are spread across different times. This arrangement may seem practical at first, but the invisible planning burden could still fall on one person. Do you think sharing out the weekly tasks in advance would ease this burden, or would it make the schedule too rigid?

A schedule is only fair if the preparation and follow-up work is shared too. For example, realizing that the child needs a change of clothes, making the shopping list, and sorting things out when something is missing are all part of the work. If one person only does what they’re told while the other has to think of and remember everything, the tasks may look evenly divided on the schedule, but the workload isn’t.

I’d say give it a try—if it works, great! There’s no need to write everything down, either.
