The Lives of TV Series Characters

The characters living in luxury that we see in local series seem very unrealistic to me. We watch someone who is a partner in a company or a lawyer, but the life they lead is literally a fairy tale. Do people in these professions really live like this in real life? Do you believe in these lifestyles, or are they all just a beautiful lie?

There is already a lot of talk about the realism of these luxurious lifestyles in local series. It varies by profession, but in general, the living standard of a middle-level lawyer or a company partner is not that extreme. Let’s not forget that earnings in Turkey often contend with taxes and currency fluctuations. I could say that these are all fictional elements designed to attract viewers.

So maybe there’s some exaggeration, but I can’t say it’s completely unrealistic either. For example, I knew a few businesswomen involved in real estate, and they really had lives full of luxury with pools. Even if the series is another world, there are people who live at this level.

I was an intern lawyer for a while, and most of the people I worked with were living ordinary lives. With a 9 to 5 job, rent, and transportation, not everyone earns enough to live luxuriously. Sometimes in TV shows, when someone takes a case, they immediately buy million-dollar cars, and I find that really funny.

Let me add that I’m not talking about those living at the minimum wage level. But for example, does even the CEO of a conglomerate live like TV characters, always in branded clothes, at parties, in homes with floor-to-ceiling windows? This life seems too flashy to me.

but for me, there’s more than just realism here. People watch those series just to escape by looking at those lives. So, even though you know it’s exaggerated, don’t you want to watch it? It seems a bit related to that for me.

You’re right, I also get really put off when I see those super luxurious scenes while watching. For example, I think the company owner you mentioned would be planning his work at his laptop at 7 a.m., sitting with coffee; all those dyed hair and fancy tables don’t match up with real busyness at all.

I think showcasing wealth in series creates a bit of disconnection from society. We shouldn’t forget the realities of Turkey. What would a middle-income family envy? These foreign-like lifestyles are also missing a bit of spirituality. That’s why everyone is complaining while watching at home.
