We argued because of a TV series, am I overreacting?

I’ve been really into my girlfriend’s favorite show for the past week. But she’s gotten so attached to this female character that I find myself getting jealous sometimes. Yesterday, I actually felt jealous and threw a little shade at her. I said, ā€˜She’s not here, I am in your life,’ and she replied, ā€˜It’s just a show, stop being ridiculous.’ Do you think this kind of stuff is normal? Can you be jealous of your partner’s obsession with a show?

Things like this are solved by stepping out of the house and blowing off some steam. Clearly, your partner has internalized the series too much; go watch a movie, new topics will come up. My spouse was once really into documentaries, and I patiently pulled them into watching something else.

I find jealousy to be normal, but it would be better to express your feelings instead of making snide remarks. For example, you could say, ā€˜Having such a strong connection with this character makes me feel a little strange.’ So, try talking instead of arguing.

What kind of jealousy is this? Do you really see a woman from the show as a rival? Let me tell you something, this kind of jealousy only annoys the other person. Focus on your own work, and instead of arguing over silly things, aim to spend quality time.

Actually, your partner’s strong attachment to a fictional character might mean that they can’t share the show with you at that moment. Engaging a bit with the series, joking around together, like switching roles in a funny way through that character, keeps the relationship vibrant. Turn jealousy into a conversation about fun. Have you tried it?

Maybe I’ve exaggerated a bit too, but the way he constantly praises the character annoys me. I feel like he’s comparing things. I told him in a normal tone, but he reacted the same way again, just saying ā€˜it’s a show, you know’ and shutting down the conversation.

Friends, there is a serious problem here, but everyone is busy saying, ā€œwhat jealousy is this?ā€ The guy is praising an imaginary woman but isn’t listening to his partner’s feelings. At some point, the situation goes beyond the show; if there’s no empathy even in such a simple issue, things could get worse. But of course, we can’t expect a generation in love with series to listen to reason anyway.
