My roommate said, 'you handle it'

My roommate is a total disaster. Not only does he not take out the trash, but he also piles up the dishes, making the kitchen unusable. I had been patient and not said anything for a week, but yesterday I couldn't take it anymore and said, 'Why don't you help out a bit too?' He casually replied, 'Oh, what's the big deal, just take care of it yourself.' Now, I'm either going to get angry and have a big fight or stay quiet and keep handling everything. What should I do in such a situation? Especially since sharing the rent makes it even more frustrating.

I experienced something similar as well; there were three of us in the house. One person had no job and was constantly making a mess. When talking didn't work, we just set cleaning days. We put a sign on the wall. Even if there were still arguments when it wasn't done, at least they didn't have an excuse anymore.

Were things always like this in this house, or is this a new situation? Maybe if it had been discussed from the beginning, it would have been more balanced.

@soncaykaldi it was always like this, but I was trying not to care. The ease of "you can handle it" really blew me away 🤷‍♀️

@kirmizikazak you're pretty optimistic. People can't even stick to their cleaning lists, and on top of that, they act shamelessly. Does hanging a sign on the wall really make a difference?

this is actually a bit of a boundary violation. even if it’s a roommate situation, equal effort is needed in shared living spaces. either you sit down and divide up the work, or you accept the situation because, in our cultural codes, such things generally fall onto one person 🙄

You've blown this cultural issue a bit out of proportion. Not everyone is like that. I both work and share the cleaning duties. There's a lack of awareness here, so don't link it directly to culture. 😅

Oh, these kinds of roommate issues are always the same. Either they're not talked about from the start, or someone is just expected to put up with it. It feels like copy-paste now.
