I'm trying to stop late-night snacking, how did you all cope?

I literally catch myself in front of the fridge every night, especially when I’m stressed. I decided to go on a diet, but I keep breaking it because of my nighttime hunger. How do you cope with this? Honestly, at some point, willpower just isn’t enough. I’m open to suggestions.

I experienced the same situation; I would literally catch myself in front of the cupboard in the middle of the night. I also had insulin resistance, that’s why I was feeling constantly hungry. I went to the doctor, and they referred me to a dietitian; it was resolved when they checked my blood values. You might want to consider getting a test done.

If you’re craving food at night, eat more protein-heavy meals in the evenings. For example, chicken or cottage cheese and such. Also, when you get to the fridge, stop for a moment and drink some water first. Often, thirst gets confused with hunger, and you’re searching for food right away.

So, you mentioned this stress; what has it been particularly connected to lately? Is work causing issues, or have you always been like this? It seems important to look at the source of stress.

Don’t underestimate willpower this much, come on. I mean, you say it’s stress, but then it turns into a habit. A person needs to resist a little bit. I think it all comes down to self-control in the end

These are actually mostly due to habits. There is something called night eating syndrome, for example; you can consult a psychologist about that. Creating a small meditation or sleep routine before bedtime can sometimes help as well. But there might be a biological issue underlying it, so it might be worth getting it checked.

Let me update you, the stress I’m talking about is because of the current situation at work. I already have to concentrate all day, and I just can’t clear my mind in the evening. I tried something different but I drank some water in the evening and it slightly suppressed my hunger afterwards. But it’s still tough.

It’s not just about being completely hungry here, it feels like there could be something else when you mention stress. You talked about work, but could there be something going on outside of work? It seems like this won’t pass without finding the reason for the stress.

I understand you, that feeling of getting up that night and searching for food in front of the cupboard feels completely uncontrollable. Everything returns to normal in the morning, but the brain doesn’t listen to hunger at that moment. You seem really tired, that feeling is quite familiar :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
