I took a hormone test, and the results are terrifying me

I’ve been experiencing extreme fatigue and hair loss for a while, so I went to the doctor, who requested a hormone test. I have the results, but I don’t understand them at all, and there’s a lot of bad stuff online. My TSH is a bit high; could it be PCOS or something? Should I show it to the doctor right away or am I overreacting?

If TSH is high, it could be related to the thyroid, while PCOS is something else. I recommend going directly to endocrinology, don’t waste time. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.

I also experienced hair loss and fatigue; it turned out to be anemia. I need to see an internist or endocrinologist who can understand the hormone test results.

Honestly, you might be exaggerating a bit. You’re reading the test results online without asking your doctor and panicking, which just adds more stress. If you don’t trust your doctor, go to another one, but the internet won’t help.

High TSH levels are usually related to the thyroid. To diagnose PCOS, it is necessary to look at ultrasound and other tests; it’s not just connected to TSH. It would be a good idea to share everything that’s on your mind with an endocrinology specialist.

Thank you friends for the comments, I looked into the results in a bit more detail. TSH was 4.5 by the way, the reference range goes up to 4. I think the other hormone was FSH, which is also close to the lower limit. I would appreciate it if you could write according to that.

You’re carrying the load, but we can’t expect doctors to explain everything in the healthcare system, because often there’s not that kind of proper communication. You have the right to ask questions; it’s normal to panic without knowing what’s what. Clearly express your concerns to the doctor.

A TSH level of 4.5 isn’t actually that high; it’s usually considered subclinical. I wouldn’t immediately jump to thinking about something like PCOS because you didn’t mention any specific symptoms. However, if FSH is low, the doctor who conducted the tests should definitely provide some commentary.
