Am I being too sensitive or am I constantly overlooked at work?

My male colleague's ideas are being considered more at work. Is it just my feelings, or is there discrimination? What do you think?

I think that's how workplaces are, I experienced the same during my internship. There was a male intern, and it seemed like everyone cared more about what he said. At one point, I directly said to the instructors, "What about my opinion?" They were a bit uncomfortable, but they noticed.

I think there's another dynamic at play there. Maybe they find it easier to talk to him, or someone might be giving him an advantage. Trust me, these things are always different than they seem. Should you just ask one or two people openly, like, 'Why do you think this is happening?'}

Make a list of questions without getting caught up in your feelings. For example, when is your opinion overlooked? In meetings, or in moments of pressure? By asking these, you'll have a more concrete conversation when talking to someone, like your team leader or someone from HR.

Here’s the thing: Maybe statistically what they say is more useful or they speak more thoroughly. You might perceive it this way because you constantly compare yourself. So try to evaluate it a bit more calmly.

In your case, there is often either an unconscious gender bias or a difference in communication style. If his ideas are regularly perceived as more valuable, this could be related to your boss's or colleagues' perceptions. If you think it's a problem, gathering evidence would be helpful. You can present a clearer situation when you go to HR.

You're right, maybe there is indeed something in communication as you said. What he says may always come across as more confident, while I sometimes feel uncertain even in my own sentences. But seeing this being done because of 'gender' is really frustrating 😬

Imagine, you and he are doing the same job, but he is considered more reliable just because he is a man. This is a completely systemic issue. It’s even unfair that you have to struggle to make your voice heard. For this, we need to stand together and demand visibility in the workplace.
