Why am I so afraid of going to the gynecologist?

I have a topic that’s been bothering me, and maybe others have experienced it too. My period has become very irregular in the last few months, but I’m hesitant to go to the gynecologist. What will I say, how will the examination go, will it hurt a lot… I don’t know, I’m really stressed out. Can those who have been for the first time share their experiences? Is the process really frightening?

Last week, my friend said, ‘Look Seda, you’ve had irregular periods for years but you still haven’t gone to the gynecologist. If something comes up later, you’ll really regret it.’ Honestly, I had a hard time going too, but then I thought, why did I postpone it for so long? There’s really no need to be scared; it’s the same for everyone anyway. A woman sees so many cases that she will listen to your problem, offer a solution, and it will pass.

I also went for the first time because of irregular periods. Normally it was regular every 28 days, but then all of a sudden I didn’t get my period for like 2 months. I was really tense before going, thinking what if I have an ovarian cyst or something. Anyway, after I went, I was totally relieved; it was just something related to hormones. I didn’t have it removed, but they gave me medication, and then it got better.

The process of going to a gynecologist is not as dramatic as it’s thought to be. In the first examination, details are usually discussed, and an ultrasound or hormone test is performed. Especially for irregular periods, ovarian or hormone functions are typically evaluated. If any procedure is to be done, they always explain the process in advance. When it comes to pain, it varies from person to person, but during a simple examination, the discomfort lasts for at most a few minutes.

Let me also add that besides irregular periods, I currently have no pain or cramps. But it’s been quite a long time since my periods have been on some months and not on others. My friend said it might be a hormonal imbalance. Can it be resolved with a check-up?

I don’t think it’s fear or anything like that; you’re actually running away from something else. Maybe something in your personal life is causing you stress? Instead of focusing directly on the gynecologist, we need to find out where this irregularity is coming from. Because it might not just be related to hormones; your lifestyle could also be affecting this pattern. So, maybe you should question this first?
