My mother-in-law scared me by recounting her labor pains

I'm pregnant with my first child and honestly, I'm a bit excited. The other day, while talking with my mother-in-law, she kept describing how terrible labor pains are. It really brought my spirits down; I didn't show it at the moment, but I started feeling uneasy inside. Now I'm really scared of natural childbirth. Do you think I should take this seriously, or do all mothers go through the same things?

My daughter, there is no one who hasn't experienced labor pains. But your mother-in-law has exaggerated a bit; not every woman goes through the same thing. For example, mine finished in 8 hours; it wasn't something unbearable. Don't let it get you down, listen to your doctor.

Why did you listen to your mother-in-law so much? Just say clearly, 'You are scaring me.' One must defend oneself; otherwise, you end up feeling anxious like this.

@ters_kose you're right, but I didn’t want to make a scene at that moment, it was in front of my spouse. Besides, it’s not the first time, they always say things that are a bit concerning 🙂

@ters_kose you can't talk back to your mother-in-law here as a bride. You have to show a little patience in front of your spouse too. After all, these things are normal within a family 🙄

Normal childbirth is a different process for every woman. What your mother-in-law describes is her own experience; your situation may not be the same. You can discuss options like epidurals with your doctor, which may also help reduce your fear.

@gelenekci_ayse so how long is this familial patience supposed to last? I mean, who has ever benefited from intimidation? I think the one who is asking should clearly say, 'don't talk to me like that.'

My friend once said: 'Is there a rule that says my pain will be as much as my mom's pain?' She's right, everyone’s pain is not the same.
