My mother-in-law said all the jewelry should stay with us, and I got angry.

While talking with my mother-in-law about the wedding preparations, she brought up the topic of gold. She literally said, 'Let's keep it with us, and we'll give it to you when you need it.' I told my mom, and she got really angry. Now I'm in a dilemma; I don't want to create any problems, but this situation is bothering me. What do you think should be done in such a situation?

Something like this happened to me too. I talked directly with my mother-in-law and said it was important to me. When I clearly said in a polite way that we wanted the jewelry to stay with us, she backed down 🙄

Let me be honest, gold is already a family business. That woman is thinking about her son's future, did she say something so bad to you? It used to be like this for us too. Now everyone is looking for a reason to badmouth their elders 🙂

Such situations are actually covered by legal regulation. The jewelry worn during the wedding is generally accepted as the bride's legal right. However, if you want to avoid issues within the family, you might consider a method like mediation.

Let me add one more detail: my mother-in-law has also pressured my spouse regarding this issue. He just brushes it off saying, 'My mom doesn’t mean it in a bad way.' Now I feel even more helpless.

There's another account here. Why did they directly say 'let it stay with us'? Are they holding onto gold or are they in debt or something? I think you should investigate this.

It's not about intention here, it's about boundaries. As an adult, decisions were made about your belongings without your involvement. Others cannot claim rights on your behalf, and your partner shouldn't remain silent about this.
