I'm stuck between my mother-in-law and my wife; I've reached the point of divorce.

It's been two years of marriage, and I'm exhausted from fighting with my spouse because of my mother-in-law constantly interfering in our lives. She comments on everything, even about how to wash certain clothes, and my spouse never tells her "Enough already." Sometimes I've even heard her gossiping openly behind my back, but my spouse objects, saying, "Don't talk about my mother." Is there any way to resolve the unrest in our family, or is this heading towards divorce?

I think it's not just the mother-in-law that's involved, but your spouse has a bit of a comfort level too. I mean, if they’re meddling in how each piece of laundry should be washed, they have really interfered in your life, but if your spouse is still saying, 'Don’t say anything about my mom,' it feels like you’ve given up control from the start. It’s important to communicate and set your boundaries.

It's so hard, you know. Let's say you wake up in the morning and you're going to have a nice breakfast with your spouse, and your mother-in-law is definitely on the phone saying something like, 'Put vinegar in the water while boiling the eggs.' You feel like you're drowning. This is clearly a topic that needs to be talked about.

After all, your mother-in-law will definitely be on your spouse's side. I understand your point, but don't you feel like you would be leaving your partner hanging? I think you need to revisit not just your relationship with your mother-in-law, but also your bond with your spouse 🙄.

This is entirely about establishing your boundaries. If your mother-in-law is overstepping, your partner needs to be able to say, 'This is how we will do it' in a way that maintains balance. I recommend talking to a family counselor and having a session with your partner. The issue doesn't seem to be yours; it looks like a malfunction in the system.

Now that I've read your comments, I realize that I seemed to be very tolerant towards my wife at first. I thought, 'That woman is his mother, I should be understanding.' But I'm really tired now, how can I explain to my wife that there needs to be a limit? Do you have any ideas?

Things like this are very common in marriages. Especially in our culture, it's hard to get mothers-in-law out of the picture. But if you don't talk to your partner seriously, saying, 'I feel like this issue is wearing us down; let's find a solution,' you might end up completely drifting apart after a while. The problem is clear, but it can be resolved through communication.

I swear I would go crazy in such a situation. It's like a mini reality show environment. My advice to you is to clearly draw boundaries by saying to your spouse, 'We're a household, we even decide on laundry matters ourselves. I have infinite respect for your mother, but this is an intrusion into our personal space.' Clarity is good.

This is entirely about your spouse's favoritism and making their stance clear. They expect your consent and label their mother's control as 'family love.' But this actually disregards your efforts and will. You are an equal individual; this arrangement cannot go on under the pretext that 'mother is sacred.' They have crossed your boundaries, put a stop to it.
