We're arguing because of wedding expenses, is this normal?

My fiancé and I are experiencing serious tension over wedding expenses. My family is pressuring me about the gold, while he says there’s no need to spend this much. On one hand, he seems right, but on the other hand, I don’t want to let my family down. How can we find a middle ground before we get married? By the way, are financial discussions like this normal?

My daughter, this is how things are. I understand your family too; the issue of gold has always been a matter of pride for us. But let me tell you, the hardest thing in marriage is the burden of debt. If I had a daughter, I would say 'you don’t need this much jewelry,' but sometimes managing our families also becomes our responsibility.

So, do you really need to have this much jewelry? Honestly, there's no need for this kind of pressure. After the wedding, you two are the ones who will be paying off those debts, which no one seems to think about. I think it makes sense for your fiancé to say you don't need to spend. You should sit down, make a list, and talk about it.

I’m sorry, but I think you need to be a bit clearer about this too. I mean, you say you don’t want your family to be embarrassed, but this is your marriage. If you don’t have enough gold, are they going to throw you out? Don’t normalize this kind of pressure.

This is a frequently discussed topic. It is very important for couples to create a joint budget plan regarding wedding expenses before getting married. If there is no plan, larger arguments can arise in the future. You should also consider your family's expectations, but if it's something that pressures you, it's essential to have a conversation with your fiancé(e) by setting clear boundaries.

Let me add that my fiancé isn't completely against what my family says, but he thinks, "all the burden will fall on us." I see where he's coming from, but at the same time, there are certain expectations in the family regarding this. So, I feel a bit stuck in between.

What kind of logic is this? Your fiancée is right, but the pressure is still on you. It's as if you're expecting unconditional harmony before the marriage even begins. Throw a wedding, make it beautiful, but if it's going to lead to a headache afterwards, what do I understand from that?
