The boss invited me for coffee the other day after work. I was a bit tense because he said, ‘I need to talk to you about something very special.’ I expected it to be something serious, like a raise or a warning, something… But we talked about some general things at the coffee shop, and he never got into the special topic he mentioned. The next day at the office, nothing came up either. Now I’m constantly worried if there’s something going on. Do you think I should take action, or should I just ignore it?
I think this is a classic delaying tactic. My former boss used to throw out comments like that, as if there was something going on, and then the work would just drag on. But generally, there wasn’t any kind of raise or anything that came out of it; it was just a lack of communication.
So, is this the first time he’s done this? I mean, this “we need to talk” and then staying silent thing. Or is it always like this?
@kahvebitmeden actually yes, they had said they needed to talk like this before but then didn’t get into the topic. but the emphasis on being this ‘special’ is a first.
@biseydiycem you say it’s a postponement, but I think this might indicate something else with a bit too much emphasis on “special.” I mean, maybe they’re testing you, looking at how you’ll react.
In such situations, it’s important to maintain professional boundaries; directly going and asking may seem hasty. However, it makes sense to open up a small conversation and gently remind them of the topic – something like, ‘We couldn’t talk last time, was there something on your mind?’ like ![]()
@yazipsildim is it necessary to dramatize this much? Sometimes in the business world, people just forget, or their troubles are trivial; you’ve already written a test or something

I think you should wait a bit, he will bring it himself.
He either isn’t aware of what he hasn’t said, or he changed his mind at the last moment. Pressing directly is risky, but if it’s something that affects your plan, ask for a specific time. Otherwise, the feeling of being kept waiting will continue.
