I said I wouldn't wear the outfit because I couldn't relax, and my partner got upset

My partner bought me a dress for my birthday, and they really like it, but honestly, I don't feel comfortable in it. I've tried it on a few times, and it looks nice in the mirror, but it's not my style and it's very tight. If I say I'm not going to wear it, they might get upset, and if I wear it, I'll be uncomfortable all day. They already frowned when I said I didn't want to wear it. How would you express this?

I think a straightforward way to say it is, 'It’s a lovely gift, thank you, but I don’t feel comfortable in it, so I can’t really wear it.' If he’s understanding, he won’t take it badly; if he wants to take it badly, there are already plenty of excuses. I’ve been in a similar situation; sometimes guys take clothing too personally.

So why doesn't he know your style? How long have you been together, for example? Has he never given you clothing gifts before?

@meraksizadam actually knows that I usually wear sporty clothes. They had bought me a sweatshirt before, but this is so different. It's the first time they're getting something like this 🤷‍♀️

@elifce but doesn’t it seem a bit rude to just thank and turn it down? After all, since it's a gift, I think it’s better to wear it once instead of outright rejecting it 🙄

The lack of body compatibility is an important detail. Even if taken with good intentions, if the end user is not satisfied, it needs to be explained a bit. Especially tight-fitting clothes require primary comfort. Try to explain the situation in a calm and clear manner: "It can stay in my closet for special occasions, but it’s not something I can wear daily." Most people can handle this expression.

I don't think there's any need for things like this. At least wear it once, act like you're having a fun time with it, and then find an excuse not to wear it again. Most guys don’t remember the details anyway, and if they're worried, it’s their problem 😳

@soran wear this but get a loose cardigan or jacket to put over it, so you can fulfill what they want and still be comfortable yourself. Plus, when it's time to take pictures, you can decide how permanent you want it to be.
