I want to go to therapy but my family is making fun of me

I've been feeling incredibly anxious lately and I want to go to therapy, but when I brought it up to my family, they belittled me by saying 'are we crazy?' Honestly, it had an effect on me, and I became indecisive. Do you think it's sensible to listen to my family, or should I start therapy for my own well-being?

I had the same situation, you know. For a while, my chest felt tight all the time, I literally couldn't breathe. I told my family, and my mom lectured me for an hour about what people would say. But I went to therapy and found out I had anxiety. I'm much better now. If you go, you don't have to tell anyone anyway.

I know it’s very hard. It’s like there’s a weight on you even when you wake up in the morning, or someone is constantly whispering in your ear that something bad is going to happen. I really think you should go, because these things don’t just go away by themselves.

To be honest, I think your family might have made fun of you saying things like "are we crazy?" but there could be another situation beneath it. Maybe they have a general fear of going to a psychologist or they might be feeling bad about themselves. I suggest you think about it; could this be the case? 🙄

Let me add this: Actually, my family isn't normally bad people, but they always have these prejudices when it comes to psychological issues. They say things like, 'we've never been through it, everything just goes on' and so on. That's why I've been indecisive.

Listen, my daughter, your well-being is more important than anything else. Your family might not have bad intentions, but it's about your health. If you were my daughter, I would send you money if necessary. This is no joke 😂

Honestly, this family attitude is a typical "we know what's best" approach. But you're an adult, you can set your own boundaries. Your family is projecting their fears onto you by putting pressure on you, that's their problem. Go to therapy with determination, and don't be hard on yourself.

Going to therapy isn't about being crazy or weak. Just like physical health, maintaining mental health requires regular care. If you find a good therapist, they can help you understand your concerns more clearly.
