Am I in a toxic relationship, or am I just overly sensitive?

I've been arguing a lot with my partner recently, and sometimes what they say really breaks my heart. But then they say things like, "You're just really sensitive, I'm just joking." At first, I agreed, but honestly, it bothers me that they're finding excuses for things that make me feel bad. Do you think this is a normal situation that should be tolerated, or could they be crossing my boundaries? I've even considered going to therapy because of this.

There's something else going on here, you know. It could be a joke, of course, but if they keep putting things on you and saying things like, "you're too sensitive," it feels a bit manipulative. It really might create an environment that constantly puts you on the defensive 😂

Things like this really drag a person's spirit down. I experienced similar things in a past relationship. In the end, I couldn't tell if it was a joke or serious. If you're feeling bad, it definitely means there's something important going on.

But look, you also admit that you're sensitive. Maybe they really don't want to hurt you, and you're just taking it personally. It's important to analyze the other side well. Always looking for bad intentions will end the relationship. 😳

If such statements are being repeated constantly, we call this 'gaslighting'. This means the other party might be trying to make you question your perception and normalize their narratives. If that's the case, it's not a healthy relationship. Your thought of therapy seems appropriate, starting individually could be a good idea.

Let me add this as an update, during one of our discussions, he said, 'You misunderstand me, you're really exaggerating!' From that moment on, I felt something gnawing at me. Maybe I really am exaggerating, or maybe it just feels like he's belittling me. Of course, it's not always like this, but it happens a lot in certain topics.

We talk about this constantly in the dorm, everyone has a "sensitive" side, which is normal. But if someone is always making you feel guilty by saying it was just a joke, then it's not a joke at all. Going into defense mode wears you down internally, just thought I'd let you know.

You see, in the end of the discussion, you are once again searching for faults within yourself. Your attitude also matters here. Think carefully, is the problem completely on their side? I think it's a two-sided situation. Perhaps you haven't even had a proper conversation with them.

'But you are very sensitive' is already the summary of the situation on its own. The person who says this either doesn’t want to admit their mistake or is avoiding taking responsibility. I think it's time to draw a serious boundary.
