The person I just met doesn’t mind late replies but expects an immediate response from me

Someone I recently met said it’s normal to reply late to messages on busy days. On the other hand, when they see my message and I don’t reply for a long time, they ask why I’ve gone quiet. It’s understandable for two people to have different texting paces, but what should you make of it when the expectations are one-sided? Do you think it makes more sense to talk about it openly at the beginning, or to see how the behavior continues over time?

The same expectation should apply to both sides.

That would annoy me; the issue isn’t who texts faster, but that the rule is flexible for only one person. Maybe they interpret messages differently, but I wouldn’t make assumptions without knowing. At a calm moment, I’d ask, “Is it okay for both of us to reply late when we’re busy?” and pay less attention to their answer than to whether they apply the same standard afterward.
