My boss laughed at my salary increase proposal, what should I do?

I spoke with my boss today and asked for a raise, but he literally laughed in my face. "It's too early for you," he said and closed the topic. What kind of step should I take in this situation? Is it sensible to push further or to be patient and wait? Should I make my stance clear, or should I just let this kind of approach slide?

Look, my daughter has been through a similar situation. Back then, I told her that the more you value yourself, the more others will value you too. The boss saying 'it's too early' is really disrespectful. I think you should clearly talk about it again; that boundary is important.

It's really frustrating to have experienced something like this so early in the morning. Especially when they smile at you like that. You seriously feel worthless. I think you should calm down first, then try to bring the topic up again politely but openly.

So let me put it clearly, why are you still thinking about it? The guy said "early" and closed the topic. Most likely, if you were to go now, you'd just get more tense. Testing the waters over time makes more sense 😅

The boss making a subjective statement like "earlier than" is actually unprofessional. Salary requests should be based on objective criteria: performance, market difference, etc. I would recommend consulting with a human resources expert, but requesting a written meeting during this process would also be professional.

Let me add this: It says 'early', but I looked at my salary, and it's even less than what the company pays someone new in my position. Honestly, that's a bit more unsettling. I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong.

This is entirely a matter of power dynamics. By saying 'early', they have simply silenced you. The work you put in should not be taken so lightly. If you can justly ask for that raise, you should definitely try to revisit the discussion. If they're implying anything related to your gender or age, you should definitely question that.

I heard from somewhere that if you want to ask for a raise, you should talk on Thursday instead of Monday. The boss tends to be softer on those days. Honestly, I haven't tried it, but I'll give it a shot sometime.
