My family doesn't want me to date my girlfriend because my salary is low, what should I do?

I have someone I've loved for 5 years, but my family is against me getting married because he has a low salary. He's such a trustworthy and loving person that I don't want to give up on him just because he doesn't earn much. But my mom keeps saying, 'Love isn't enough in marriage, be a little more practical.' What do you think is more important, economic concerns or love?

I had a relationship like yours too; my family criticized me all the time for having a low salary for four years. But now we're married, and my spouse has been promoted at work over time. In short, the main issue for me was how much respect and love he/she gave me.

I think you need to have a serious conversation with your mother. You need to bring up the salary issue and ensure they understand. You could even explain openly, together with your partner, how you plan your life in the future.

Hey, let me ask you something: When you have kids in the future, their expenses will come up, and it's not easy to manage a household. Your family probably doesn't want you to struggle, that's why they say it's logical. Love is a beautiful thing, but it doesn't work in practice 🙂

Economic concerns are a very common topic of discussion in marriage. According to research, financial issues are one of the biggest sources of stress among couples. So, don't underestimate the family's concerns, but you can create a sustainable plan together.

You're right, I think my family is more concerned about "will this affect us in the future?" Actually, my partner doesn't want to stay in this job either and is applying for new positions. But they want a bit of patience for the process.

I'm stating the situation directly: For men, the salary issue is generally a matter of pride. He may not be earning much right now, but if he continues to work hard, he will likely improve over time. I would say to look at his vision, not his salary.

A 5-year relationship isn't easy, you know. You share so much, and then letting go just because of a salary would be really tough. Waking up in the morning and imagining someone next to you, that feeling is precious. But on the other hand, constantly having this argument with your family can be exhausting 🤷‍♀️

Here, your partner's attitude is also important. If they are making an effort to increase their salary, your family will ultimately see that. But if they are in a "I'm fine as is, never mind" mindset, it's understandable that they'd worry. You need to show yourself through different plans.
