Can my mom interfere with my period underwear?

I prefer to wear dark-colored underwear during my period; I think it’s more practical. But recently my mom noticed this and said, “I buy them in all colors, why aren’t you wearing them? Do you think you’ll always have stains?” Is it really that important? Should I do what she says to avoid upsetting her, or should I just ignore it and do what I know is best? Is it weird to make a big deal out of this?

I think your mom is right, the whole dark color choice seems a bit exaggerated to me. I mean, even if stains might show, there’s a washing machine, it gets cleaned. I wear colorful clothes when I have my period, and I haven’t had any issues. If it were my mom, she would have gotten upset about something like this too.

Okay, what your mom said isn’t illogical, but it’s something that’s up to you practically. For example, my friend once said, ‘My mom always buys white, and I keep it for good, only wearing it on clean days so it doesn’t go to waste.’ Try explaining the situation to your mom a bit more properly; I think she’ll understand.

It’s completely reasonable to prefer wearing dark-colored underwear during your period. If it’s something that makes you feel more comfortable and secure, I think you should convince your mom of its necessity. But you might want to say it clearly, like ‘I feel more comfortable this way,’ without being hurtful, so she doesn’t misunderstand.

Actually, I’m trying not to upset my mom, which is why I didn’t explain it in an angry way. But then I realized that she seems to be really concerned about that stain issue. There was a white piece of clothing she had me try on, but to be honest, I felt uncomfortable. I guess I need to talk about the situation again.

I think your mom is upset about something else; it’s not actually about the color of your underwear. Maybe she’s being sensitive about why you’re not using what she bought. Or is she wondering, ‘Is my daughter hiding something?’ It seems like she might have some concerns of her own; otherwise, she wouldn’t be so fixated on it.
