Am I dressing too boldly according to my mom, or is she being unreasonable?

The other day, while I was picking out a dress from my closet, my mom said, 'You don’t need to wear tight things to draw attention.' But I think there’s nothing wrong with looking modern; after all, everyone wants to be liked. Do you think we should pay attention to these kinds of comments from our elders, or should we just do what we believe is right? It feels a bit like she’s meddling.

My mom used to say, 'You're drawing attention to yourself, there's no need for that,' when I wore tight pants. But over time, she gave in because I didn't compromise my style. After a while, they get used to it anyway; I think as long as you show your determination respectfully.

I can say I experienced the same thing. There was a lot of controversy over my graduation dress, it caused a fuss because it had bare shoulders. But I spoke clearly once, I said, 'I want to dress freely, not disrespectfully.' Now they don't get involved in such matters.

Honestly, it's hard for me to say your mother is wrong. We live in a society, and there are certain rules. Tight pants or whatever can draw attention, some people's intentions can go sideways, and then we get into trouble. Modernity is one thing, family values are another 🫠

I find it interesting that your mother is making such a big deal out of this. I mean, whether it’s open or fitted, it’s just a dress after all. Who knows, maybe she’s projecting onto you things she couldn’t wear when she was younger.

Anne might have said that just because she was thinking of you, but ultimately you should decide what to wear yourself. Maybe it's a good idea to tell her that this is your choice.

Let me add one more thing: My mom isn't really that conservative, but it seems like she's afraid of attracting men's attention. She usually starts with something like, 'We're thinking of you.'

I was wondering, does your mom make these comments more often depending on which group of friends you're with? Is she worried that you might cause a disturbance if you go somewhere?

It's really strange. You want to feel good in the clothes you wear, but when your mom says, "what's the need to draw attention?" you end up feeling guilty. Especially in the morning, you stand in front of the mirror for a long time, struggling to find something to wear, and it just drives you crazy.
