My family judges me based on my girlfriend's salary, do you think they are right?

I've been in a really nice relationship with my boyfriend for 2 years, but my family constantly talks about his salary. They're saying things like, 'He's not suitable for you, you'll regret this in the future.' I really love him, and I think such things shouldn't determine our relationship. But honestly, they do confuse me. Do you think I should pay attention to what my family says, or should I continue with my relationship?

I experienced something similar; I was with my girlfriend for 3 years, and my family kept criticizing her because her salary was low. We got married, and even after 5 years, we're still happy. Who can really know which salary will make you happy? Love is what truly matters.

Actually, it's quite common for families to question you like this because they care about you. But saying things like 'find someone better' is a bit harsh. If you want a life with the person you love, you need to stand firmly behind that decision 😬

The main issue here isn't the salary, but rather the family trying to control your life. You determine who you'll be happy with, and you define your relationship with money. They should realize that a woman is an individual a little bit 😮‍💨

But let me tell you, your family might be right. Salary isn't the only issue; do they pay attention to work ethics, responsibilities, etc.? I don't think you should just blindly go because you "love" it.

Let me update you, this topic comes up in every conversation. I couldn't say anything to my girlfriend because I'm afraid she'll take it to heart. But my mom just said, 'Choose someone who will let you relax.' I'm really confused.

Be honest, sit down with your family and say, 'His salary concerns me, not you.' So if you're going to decide about your future with your partner, clearly define the boundaries. Your family needs to know their limits too 🫠

Well, think about it this way, if I were in that position, I would tell my girlfriend openly. Something like, 'My mom is questioning her salary' or whatever. She probably wants some clarity too, so why hide this issue? 😳

There are two dynamics here: establishing individual boundaries with your family and planning a financial shared life with your partner. If you can't establish these, bigger crises may arise in the future. You might consider seeking relationship counseling.
