I've been through something similar; my mom would always throw shade at my choices, not towards my spouse. During that time, our home was really tense. You and your spouse should be united and stand firm. You can't run a marriage just to avoid upsetting your mom.
I already see your family as being right as the girl's side. A woman should support her son like his mother does. If she can't find a job, why are you struggling? I'm not saying your mother is wrong.
