Oh, I couldn't tell my mom when I got my first period either; I confided in a cousin who was like an older sister. I think you should bring it up using a different excuse, like if you need to buy pads or something like that.

The reason you're not actually telling your mother seems to be a lack of open communication. I think you'll need to show a bit of courage to break this pattern. Aside from women's health, for example, if there's pain, suggest going to the doctor; you can get straight to the point.
A friend of mine couldn't tell his mother that he got his period, and the woman thought he was pregnant! I'm not exaggerating; when we don't talk about such weird things, it just gets bigger. I think it's better to explain it straightforwardly.
