My dad wants me to be an engineer, but I don't want to

My family expects me to be an engineer, but I’m interested in art. I feel like I have to fulfill their dreams. This is a huge pressure for me, and honestly, I don’t know what to do. What would you do in this situation?

my dad was similar too, he always used to say ā€˜get a trade’. they are right in a way, but ultimately it’s your life. right now, I’m working in a job I don’t like.

How old are you? I’m surprised by how involved your family is.

I am 22 years old, but I live with my family. I can’t be independent because of the economic situation.

@makarnaoncesi I’m sorry, but if you’re working at a job you don’t like, that’s your choice. Don’t blame your family or anyone else.

Family pressure is very common, especially if there is no economic independence. But if you have a career plan built around your creativity, you should have a concrete goal and examples to show for it. Otherwise, the word ā€˜art’ can remain quite vague.

@kahvecakmasi can blame his family, but if he didn’t nag so much, maybe he would have found his own path.

this won’t work under pressure.

You don’t want engineering, but what will you do with art? Do you have a plan, what will the money-making part be? Maybe that’s why your family has insisted so much. You can’t just say ā€œI don’t want toā€ without any substance.
