They are comparing my salary to my happiness, what should I do?

I have been with my girlfriend for 3 years, but after my family started working, they suddenly became "her salary is insufficient, he can't make you happy" mode. To be honest, they are going through a tough time financially, but I know that he values me. How can I talk to my family and convince them, or could they really be right? I'm confused.

I've been in a similar situation. My family also told my girlfriend, 'his salary isn't good, your future is at stake' and so on. I was really angry at first, but then I realized that my family was projecting their own financial struggles onto me. I talked to them calmly and got them to focus on my happiness. I think you should give that a try.

You need to speak openly. But do it this way: Explain why you chose this person emotionally, without blaming them. Something like, 'They value me, and that's the most important thing for me.' You'll figure out the financial issues later on anyway. Help them understand your feelings.

In fact, these kinds of family reactions are very common, especially during times of economic crisis. Families project their anxieties onto their children. If you express that you understand how they feel and gently emphasize other things that you value while talking, you can find a way to resolve the situation.

I think the family might have a point. Because you've written that they struggled after you, they might be saying this because they care about your well-being. Maybe the salary really does seem insufficient. Love is beautiful, but I would advise you not to set aside your logic.

You might be right, my family especially struggled a lot with debts last year, and that's partly why they seem sensitive. I didn't mention this topic to my partner because I think it would hurt them, but I'm not quite sure how to find a balance with my family. Should I maybe just give it some time?

So, did your partner say anything about their salary? Or do they have any plans regarding your future together? For instance, if they're thinking about a better job in the long run, you could share that with your family 🤦‍♀️

My daughter, I understand that family pressure is tough, but think clearly about your future. Love is a wonderful thing, but finances are also a reality of life. Before acting on emotion, seriously consider whether it can genuinely offer you a future. Do you want your children to go through tough times?

I think there's something else going on here. Did something happen in the past between your partner and your family? The salary might be an excuse; there could be a more significant issue. Maybe they need to confront each other? 🤦‍♀️
