My neighbor's son drove me crazy with his writing

A few days ago, my neighbor’s son wrote to me on DM, and when I read the message, I didn’t know what to do. He’s a high school friend, but it feels really strange for him to do something like this right now. Should I reply, or should I ignore it?

A former friend of mine messaged me like that on DM as well. They clearly said they liked me. I felt pretty weird about it, but then when we talked face to face, I saw they were being sincere. I wouldn’t recommend deleting them right away; first, find out their intentions.

If this kid is your high school friend, you probably know him, what kind of guy is he? Has he ever done something that showed he liked you before?

@kahvebitmeden honestly had never done anything like this before. But we weren’t very close, so he wasn’t someone I would sit down and confide in.

@soncaykaldi it might be friendly, but I think writing in DMs smells a lot like cowardice. One should talk face to face; can you really solve things over messages?

Sliding into DMs has become the norm, and the reason it feels weird here is the dynamic of high school friendships. It’s important to be mindful of boundary issues on social media, but it’s entirely context-dependent. You can make better decisions based on the content of the message.

@yazipsildim not everyone has the courage to talk face to face like you do, or maybe they just don’t have the opportunity, so why judge directly?

If you think you should respond, ask about the intention, so don’t get into a lot of empty talk. If you’re clear, you won’t feel uneasy. If not, you just end the topic.

Strange, but don’t exaggerate.
