The hairdresser put in too much dye, my hair turned pitch black!

My natural hair color was light chestnut, but I wanted to darken it a bit, and now it’s literally jet black. I don’t understand how they misunderstood this at the hairdresser. Everyone says it looks good on me, but I can’t look in the mirror. Do you think I’ll get used to it, or should I have it redone? Have you ever experienced something like this, and how can it be fixed?

I had the same thing happen to me. I wanted a dark shade from light ash brown, but they almost made it black. We lightened it a bit with a bleach, but of course, the hair got damaged. My advice is to wait a while for it to lighten on its own because another intervention could make it worse.

To be honest, even if I describe exactly what I want to the hairstylist, it has happened to me once too. My hair turned out like a dark chestnut, and over time it faded a bit, but I had to wait 3 months for it to completely return to the shade I wanted. I think you should be a little patient as well.

Let me ask you something, how exactly did you say it to the hairdresser? Because when you say ‘a bit dark’, it can be interpreted differently by everyone. When a dark tone is applied to your hair, it can also turn black. I think it could be completely due to a misunderstanding, let’s not blame them right away.

If you’re really feeling very uncomfortable, you might need to get a professional bleaching treatment done. But don’t do it at home, go to a hairdresser. They have specialists for that, as they use the right techniques to lighten your hair without damaging it.

Dyeing your hair much darker than your natural color seems too radical at first. As you wash it over time, the dye can fade a bit and feel softer, making it seem more natural. However, if you’re experiencing significant discomfort, the color of the dye may need to be lightened, and it should be removed or toned professionally. Definitely avoid trying this at home.

You might be right, I think I might not have explained it very clearly. I just wanted a slightly dark and natural tone… Now I keep looking in the mirror and I’m having a really hard time getting used to it. I’m doing a few washes right now, but it hasn’t made much difference. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

It’s completely normal for your hair color to look like this. The first 1-2 weeks of the new dye always seems darker to the eye. As you wash it more often, it will return to its natural state and won’t look as harsh. Be a little patient, I think it will lighten on its own :face_with_peeking_eye:

I think you shouldn’t worry too much. People have gray and blue hair; yours is just black. My friends always dye their hair, at first they say it’s dark, but then within a week or two, the color settles. Just wash it a bit and be patient, it will go back to its natural state.
