The evening dress I borrowed got torn — now I’m in trouble

I borrowed a dress from a friend that she had left overnight. A few small tears formed without me realizing it. I'm not sure whether I should go to a tailor before returning it or just explain it directly to my friend. It's a piece she put a lot of effort into obtaining, and I think it would be rude if it gets damaged. Should I quietly get it repaired and give it back that way, or should I have been upfront from the beginning?

I think you should quietly take it to the tailor, people make too much of these things. I once fell and tore my clothes at a wedding, I never mentioned it. I just gave it away.

"You said it's such a meaningful piece, I wouldn't want to give it away," why are you taking it then? Was it really necessary? Go ahead, tell me."

@soncaykaldi didn’t say anything special, but they were hesitant to lend it. I said, 'I’ll wear it for one night, I’ll take care of it.' So now I’m worried they’ll regret it.

You wouldn't get stuck on a torn dress, you'd say it was a mistake and even offer to fix it. Keeping silent about the repair would be shameful. I think you should explain.

The tailoring work has also changed in the meantime, there are no old stitches or anything. If they can't close it nicely according to the fabric, it might look more obvious. It makes sense to talk directly.

@benbisorayim You know, I think it’s twice as unpleasant when you have it repaired and it turns out bad. If you’re in the wrong, apologizing is a virtue, okay? We’re the kind of people who take care not to let things get torn.

What do you need that for, just have it repaired and give it like that.

I find the idea of not mentioning it when you get it repaired risky. What if the tailor realizes it's been altered and figures out that you noticed and hid it? You'd lose both the value and trust. Be clear about it, I don't think it can be resolved without talking.
