Why does my mom want pads during my period?

My mom is very insistent about me using tampons during my period. She wants me to use pads, but I just can’t get comfortable with them. My mom says things like “be alert.” Do tampons really cause harm? There’s a lot of pressure within the family about this.

My mom and I also clashed a lot about this; she didn’t want me to use anything other than pads. She didn’t say it exactly for this reason, but she would say things like, ‘It wouldn’t be healthy.’ I think it was due to habit and fear.

What harm is this referring to, I mean is it about hygiene or something else? Can you explain a bit?

@kahvebitmeden emphasizes hygiene a lot. It’s like they’re saying I will harm my body with a tampon or something. I couldn’t quite figure out what they meant.

@soncaykaldi but I think it’s not just fear or habit. In the past, there were many misconceptions about tampons like ‘they leave residue, they’re dangerous.’ There are still people who think that way.

Tampons are not harmful when used hygienically, there is clear information on this. But if you don’t change it for a long time, it can cause toxic shock syndrome. If you explain it to your mom like this, she might be a bit more convinced.

it’s tough to persuade someone, though.

@aklimkaldi I think you should talk to your mom directly, don’t hesitate to ask her “why don’t you want it?” You won’t be able to understand each other without grasping her reasoning.

that’s a tough situation :grimacing:

Maybe it’s related to your mother’s own experiences? Back then, tampons might have been less known and perceived as riskier. If she also has a hygiene obsession, she could be even more worried. Has she ever tried to explain by giving examples from her own past?
