My partner never shares their financial problems, is that normal?

I've been with my girlfriend for a year. Overall, the relationship is going well, but I have no idea about her financial situation. She doesn't mention her debts or say anything about her earnings. When I ask her, she gives evasive answers. I think she might not want to open up about it because it's something very personal, but on the other hand, if we think about having a shared life in the future, wouldn’t this be a problem? If you were in my place, would you press her on it or would you leave it for a while?

I think that's normal, not everyone might feel obligated to share their money. My ex was also very secretive about money matters. Apparently, his family never talked about this topic since his childhood, so he got used to it that way. Maybe your partner grew up like that too 😂

I've been through this too. I had a long relationship, and we never talked about this topic. I found out he had a mountain of debt when we were about to get married. Ask directly; if he avoids the question, he's probably hiding something. Otherwise, why would he dodge it? 😂

But could it be that you were also pushing too hard from the beginning? Some people don’t want to share their private lives, and that’s not abnormal. Especially if you’ve been together for a year, maybe you need to give it a little more time. If you directly say 'I need to know about your financial situation,' the other person might feel pressured.

This issue is somewhat related to privacy. Sometimes people hesitate to share financial matters even with their closest ones. If you are thinking about a shared life, at least clearly ask with the intention of "I need to know our financial situation when making plans." But for deeper things, like debt issues and such, you’ll learn about those over time.

Let me update you. Actually, I don't think I'm being very controlling about this. I just occasionally ask questions like 'Are you saving up, how do you balance your spending?' But he tells me directly that it's not my business. Isn't that really hurtful? 🙃

What kind of logic is this? When a person starts a relationship, they share special things at some point. How will you build a life together with someone who closes themselves off and doesn’t say anything? I think questions like the ones you mentioned in the update are very normal; the issue might be with them.
