He keeps texting me to order food

My roommate's lack of planning is driving me crazy. They don't cook, the fridge is empty, and whatever we eat, we order using my card. But when it comes to sharing, they just say "we'll figure it out later" and brush it off. I even paid the rent this month, but the food situation is even more frustrating because it happens every day. Should I just say "don't do that" directly, or should I start to distance myself a little?

I also went through the same things because of a roommate at one point. But I wonder if you clearly defined your boundaries from the beginning? For example, if you haven't talked about "my card, my food," then everyone feels entitled to that comfort. So, if you let it slide once knowingly, they'll keep piling it on you. Plus, no one mentions the effort that goes into filling that cabinet and cooking. I suggest you sit down and talk about it; I mean, there is a limit to saying, "we can sort it out later."

Have you ever seriously asked about this situation at least once? Or is he just saying things he likes in his orders? Is he doing it just for his own enjoyment, or is it truly unplanned? It’s important to understand this 😳

@sorgulayan I actually noticed that he talks about the things he loves. For example, when I say I'm on a diet for a day, he adds two pizzas or something. Even if I say, 'Wouldn't it be nice to get this, too, so it appeals to me?' he doesn't care.

@soran honestly, you made a mistake by taking out your card from the start. If you had said 'Everyone should pay for themselves' from the beginning, you wouldn't have had to go through this much effort.

I think there might be something else going on here. I mean, when you say it’s the same story every day, that seems a bit odd. Maybe the situation is financial? Could it be that they can’t pay their bills? They might be attributing it to things like 'we’ll just adjust' to avoid looking foolish...

Look, when a person makes a sacrifice and doesn't say anything about it, that sacrifice can be taken for granted. But the point where you get upset is when this continues and its value isn't recognized. Material things can create a lot of problems, so that's why a person needs to make this clear from the start. In other words, you can't just stay silent. Otherwise, it becomes greed, and they benefit from you in an undeserved way. Solve this right away.

You mentioned that it could be about money, but the one asking said they even paid the rent. If we're going to take that approach, then why doesn't the roommate just openly say, 'I have a debt'? Doesn't that seem like bad intentions?

@kadir_kiymetci you say it's sacrifice, but I think this isn't sacrifice, it's just being passive. If a person can't say no from the beginning, it seems unreasonable to get angry later 🙂

I was also a bit saddened by the fact that the other side can use you so comfortably. Being distant can sometimes be an aesthetics. This friend must think, 'I do it every day; after all, it's not something that will be called out.' Set a boundary that you would say, let him cook the chicken and eat it on his own.
