My mom doesn't like my clothes, I'm going crazy!

Every time I go out, my mom doesn’t like my clothes and constantly wants me to change them. The other day I bought a new dress, but she says, ‘Don’t forget how old you are to wear this.’ So, I feel really pressured. I want a bit of freedom, but I know that in her eyes, everything is for my own good.

Ah, that sentence by the mother, it’s classic.

Very familiar. My mom also wanted me to wear shorts and a t-shirt instead of a one-piece swimsuit last summer on vacation. I said I was just sleeping to avoid being criticized; I didn’t go into the water.

How old are you then? Are you still living in the same house?

@benbisorayim I’m 24 years old and yes, we live in the same house. I can’t move out right now because of the rent.

I’m sorry, but if you still live in the same house, you can’t tell your mom to “stay out of my business.” You have to follow her rules. If you move out, freedom will come.

Tell your mom something like, ‘Is this outfit suitable? Am I going to walk around dragging my butt on the ground?’ It might ease the pressure a bit.

There might actually be a bit of a control issue underneath this. Even if Mom says, “I want what’s best for you,” it seems like she’s trying to impose her own truths. I think you need to set some boundaries, but this should be done in an undisputed environment.
