My family says I should do a social media detox. Are they right?

I've been a bit too attached to my phone for the past week, I know. My mom practically sat down in front of me and gave me a long speech about how "You never have time for us." My dad took the opportunity to say, "This thing will rot your brain." Is social media really that harmful, or are they exaggerating a bit? But honestly, being in front of a screen all the time tires me out sometimes, too. Do you think doing a detox would be a solution?

I experienced the same thing, especially during the pandemic when I was glued to my phone. My mom even joked, 'I’m forgetting your face.' I completely quit social media for a week, and I noticed a serious difference; my mind felt much clearer. I think you should try it.

The part about whether detox works is really up to you. If completely giving up your phone seems difficult, for example, you could restrict it to certain hours during the day. Don't look at it at all when you wake up in the morning and for an hour before going to bed; you'll notice the difference.

To be honest, I don't think your family is 100% wrong. You say you "got too caught up"; since you're aware of it, why are you still acting so defensive? The truth is, you should try to set your own boundaries. Otherwise, you're already saying you're tired...

Being constantly in front of a screen can lead to fatigue and distraction, and there are many studies on this. The fact that family members notice it so much is a sign that you might be spending too much time on it. Perhaps instead of a 'detox', you could add some breathing breaks. If you still can't control it, you might want to consult a specialist.

Now I noticed one more thing; my mom asked me the other day to sit down and have tea and chat with her, but I was busy posting stories at that moment. That's why the phrase 'we forgot your face from looking at the screen' came up. After thinking a bit, it seems they have a point, but I'm still not sure what the right balance should be.

But look, sometimes mothers may bring up different things while conveying a different message. So is the phone really the issue here, or is your mother trying to make you notice another kind of attention she wants? I think you should test it out: take a break from social media for a week and see how they react.

I don't understand why people say, 'Let me detox, and it'll be fine.' Look, it's not about the duration; if there's an addiction, detox is not the solution, a system change is needed. Since you said not to post stories while drinking your tea, get that straight first. Is constantly escaping into detox a good idea?
