I'm brushing off my mom's portion pressure with diet lies

My mom's cooking is legendary, but the portions are just huge. I wanted to lose weight, so at one point I said I was 'on a diet', and since that day, she serves me smaller plates. But here's the strange part: I'm not actually on a diet. I'm just scared of not finishing my mom's food. I know this isn't right, but I can't find another way to tell her to stop. Do you think I should be honest and tell her? Or is this method sustainable?

I think your solution has been quite practical, but it might cause some trouble in the long run. I'm just like you; my mom puts an insane amount of food in front of me. But I directly told her, 'Mom, I can't eat this much, put less.' At first, she didn't understand, but then she got used to it because I also mentioned that leaving food on the plate is waste. Being straightforward might be the solution for you.

Doesn't anyone ever nag you about your diet or anything? Like, don't they ever ask if you've lost weight or something? I feel like I would get caught 😅

@elif89 don't ask, they ask, but I just say 'I'm going very lightly' and it passes. Actually, they seem aware but we don't talk about it.

I think it's silly to try to fool your moms with things like this. After all, your mom does this because she cares about you; if you just honestly said, 'I can't eat this much', there wouldn't have been any problem in the first place. I think it might be hard to regain her trust even if you explain now.

Actually, portion control is part of healthy eating, and this way you are doing the right thing without realizing it. However, being honest in communication is important because our eating patterns are often shared with those around us. If you talk openly with your mother, you can receive sustainable support.
